When a hawk is found dead high in a tree, ensnared by a kite-string and dangling like the Hanged Man of the tarot, a newly ordained minister is confronted with big questions about the nature of the soul. An encounter with the hawk's widow reveals the bird to be both a powerful symbol and a once-living being. Struck by her grief — raw and unsentimental, unlike human mourning — he begins to ask what makes us, as humans, believe ourselves more worthy than other animals. And whether he might hold space, and offer humanity, to grant the animal’s spirit its own place in eternity.

All music by me, except the subtle electronic soundtrack underlying my moment of doubt, which features a sample by Jeff Cravath. Oh, and Fairy did some plucking on the Sansula and back-up crooning during that first, channeled snippet of Don’t Leave Him Hangin’.

We explore the trippy tropes of place-as-character, nature’s boundless beauty and dangers, and the sometimes-necessity of boarding-up-a-portal.

Comparing notes on the creative process, psychedelic influences, and sharing recommendations of books, music, and films, we revel in a mutual admiration of each other’s work.

Even though all things that look/sound similar are connected, we managed to tell Huni Kuin from Loony Toons & Shipibo-Conibo from Evil-Knievel.

We traced the riverine roots of the milk-mustached Drunk Monkey People’s circuitous designs back to the anaconda choirs of their creation myth (scales for days). We sat, as if in ceremony, w the riddle of sickness & the serpent’s place in amazonian&Asclepius’ lore. Snake oil or serpent medicine?

We weighed the value of dream-tending vs. analysis & as we wondered how to concoct a cure for loneliness I remembered the psycho-magical Dream Theatre I used to facilitate, where we would often transcend Joseph Conrad’s maxim “we live as we dream—alone.”

&just as Sophia & I considered questions that refuse to be answered & answers that refuse to be questioned, our pod-cast spell was interrupted by a phone-call from our friend comedian Shane Mauss.

Sophia co-wrote the book When Plants Dream w Daniel Pinchbeck & has a bouncing baby blog on substack called NUMA.

First from my humble jungle abode to my father's neurodegerative memory palace in Miami, & now I've just landed in the urban jungle of NYC for my art show & performance on August 13th. I used to spend a lot of time here pre-911, was gonna move here even & am sure to recover memories long forgotten, parts of myself I stored for future visitation. That's the theme of this short ep: Anemnesis - the remembering of things from a supposed previous existence.

I recite a chapter from my unfinished manuscript of Aya writings titled VR: Vegetal Reality, laid atop a dynamic ambient bedding of sound sculpted by Soularflair w/ field-recorded icaros sung in ceremony by the Shipibo shaman Cesar "Soimetza" Bardales woven into the design.

This tale deals exclusively w/ the passage through places that can only be recalled while alert in the alterered state. So wear your purge bucket as a space helmet & join me as I journey past Jupiter without ever leaving the atmosphere of earth.

Some of this curse has fallen upon me, it seems, and I am working hard to lift it.

In the Mexican jungle, deforestation unleashed Leishmania, a parasite vectored by a sandfly, and I am infected by its flesh-eating affliction Leishmaniasis. Marked by volcanic lesions on my left cheek and right hand I'm undergoing an impatient transformation (TM) while sapping insight from these unsightly sores for eye-sight. As I wait for medicine to arrive, I examine my experience (as well as this Herzogian notion of the “unfinished country”) through shamanic, ecological, and pragmatic lenses.

Seated at the lotus feet of my dis-ease, I embrace it as my teacher. In classic SPAOP-fashion, I explore themes of inter-species diplomacy and delve into the delicate balance between a parasite and a symbiot. I also examine the intersections of psychedelic ecology and ecodelic psychology, as well as the thin line between parasitology and parapsychology, while contemplating the merits of redemption for both the parasite and myself.

It's like a curse weighing on an entire landscape. And whoever goes too deep into this has his share of this curse.”

All the stories are based in the Ayahuasca experience, sourced from my private stash. Not unlike an audiobook, the dark, poetic prose intends to take the audience on an immersive listening experience, enchanting them into an altered state. The main tale takes place at the intersection of parapsychology and parasitology, and revolves around my visionary encounter with a parasite who, during a 2014 sojourn in the Peruvian amazon, held my body and mind hostage.

Aside from facilitating plant medicine ceremonies & vending shamanic paraphernalia, Kent Osborn is also a painter & writer. He published a book of his Ayahuasca-inspired, visionary art called InKENTations, & wrote Shinan, which chronicles the different "kené"--the circuitous designs distinct to the Shipibo tribe of the Ucayali region of Peru. The patterns of the Kené are inspired by the shamans' icaros (healing songs).

This episode consists of a conversation I recorded in 2014, in San Fancisco, when Kent returned from his first Shipibo-flavored Ayahuasca ceremony in Lima. He passionately and humorously shares an experience he had with a powerful shaman, wherein he crafted objects w/ his voice & ecountered ancestral spirits. I counter his wonder-filled account w/ a tale of one of my own early Aya experiences, in which the voice also played a central role in navigating & crafting space.

Aside from facilitating plant medicine ceremonies & vending shamanic paraphernalia, Kent Osborn is also a painter & writer. He published a book of his Ayahuasca-inspired, visionary art called InKENTations, & wrote Shinan, which chronicles the different "kené"--the circuitous designs distinct to the Shipibo tribe of the Ucayali region of Peru. The patterns of the Kené are inspired by the shamans' icaros (healing songs).

This episode consists of a conversation I recorded in 2014, in San Fancisco, when Kent returned from his first Shipibo-flavored Ayahuasca ceremony in Lima. He passionately and humorously shares an experience he had with a powerful shaman, wherein he crafted objects w/ his voice & ecountered ancestral spirits. I counter his wonder-filled account w/ a tale of one of my own early Aya experiences, in which the voice also played a central role in navigating & crafting space.

We talk about the physical locale of the collective unconscious, personification and encryption in dream states, time travel, the prophetic nature of creativity, and more. I also get a chance to relay a few pertinent instances of precognition and time loops from my own life.

Gib Strange is a writer of post-ironic, meta-modern fiction. His witty work is filled w/ carefully balanced, tessellated paradoxes & insightful observations. He released parts of his novel, Notes From The Uncanny Valley, as an audiobook-disguised-as-podcast. It’s a "coming-of-information-age" kinda tale, permeated by a feeling of isolation & a sense of camaraderie w/ information itself. In it the narrator’s voice drifts dreamily on a bed of ambient sound like a ghostly tour guide highlighting the remains of the real as they fade into shades of virtuality.

For me Gib’s writings condition a particular way of thinking, feeling, & seeing--aweaving, really--that may inspire the reader to want to write as well, to cast out their perceptual nets & take note of patterns in the world around them, in hopes of reeling in some detectable imprints of meaning.

We struggled thru some techNickle diFickleties that forced us to try out all the different recording platforms in existence. Very fitting for the kind of technallergic topics we explored. As a result the conversation is divided into 3 parts & interspliced w/ segments from Gib’s audiolized narrative. Unfortunately the first 1/2 hour of our conversation has some crippled, crackly audio bits, like gristle for the ears, but it’s not too bad, so just spit em out, ok?

The way Dave describes it is that he simply woke up one morning & no longer felt like Dave, like the Dave he had, up to that moment, identified as. He woke up from Dave, and found himself to be a Whole Host of Sensations (WHoS Dave?) just… like… an embodied being with lots of bodily sensations that communicated to "him" from the depths of that being. There was a light too, though he didn’t conceptualize it. Several months later he began using the term “transmission” to help explain the phenomena that occurred when others had contact w/ him. He now shares the “Enlightenment Transmission” w/ people around the world, inspiring them to be their authentic selves. U may have heard about Dave Oshana on ep 7. He's the guru-type guy Jasun Horsley works w/ & writes about. In one of his blogs, JaHo once warned: “If you value your identity, you will stay away from Dave Oshana.”

I'm taking this opportunity to go solo to share some musings, perspectives, & reflections on the current situation by sending a trippy lil broadcast from my cozy little quarantine to yours. I hope it puts a smile on your face & thoughts in your mind, & that this blend of cosmic, comedic, & contemplative content is a welcome distraction into the heartland. At any rate, you’ll learn a few (bad) words in Dutch.

Originally, I just wanted to share a short, sound-scaped story called “The Man in the Jungle” with you (previously only available on my Patreon page) in order to cross-reference my recent appearances on the Third Eye Drops podcast and The Cosmic Nod podcast—both of which were heavily Ayahuasca themed—just like the story. But then the apocalypse started, so I thought why not ponder & pander to the pandemic theme for a few bars, & tie it in to the tale by riffing on the shipibo-placebo model of healing through the imagination. So here’s all of that, & more. You'd be missing out, but if you wanna skip straight to the story—it starts about 21 minutes in.

This little storytime transmission is only about twenty minutes long for a change! And though there's no guest, it is a self portrait as another person, because it's not my neutral voice narrating here, but an "altered ego", whose babble sounds like "the ranted banter you might overhear at a mixer of tricksters". His telling touches onto some of the recurring themes of the show--the limits of language, the fringes of reality, psychedelics, shamanism, literature as a metaphor for immortality, death and resurrection, etc-- as well as foreshadowing some of themes we'll discuss on the next episode, which will be titled "Current Channels and Rivers of Song". Aaaaaand there's an extra bonus segment that starts around the ten minute mark, a tale of enchantment laid to rest on a bed of sound. This segment reflects specifically on the sound and sorcery of an "adept witchdoctor", his soft whistling, and the manner in which his masterfully regulated breath effects the minds and bodies of the patients over whom he presides with this form of subtle, psychic surgery. (Oh, and there's a field recording that functions as an outro theme, sung by shipibo shaman Don Cesar aka Sui Metza)
